ADHD Q & A

What is ADHD?

ADHD, otherwise known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a chronic condition that can affect your child’s ability to concentrate. They may have difficulty staying on task at home and at school.

Roughly 6.4 million children aged 4-17 have been diagnosed with ADHD in the United States. Studies show boys are three times more likely to have ADHD than girls. ADHD often continues into adulthood.

Are there different types of ADHD?

Three types of ADHD exist, each with differing symptoms. They're called hyperactive-impulsive, inattentive, and combined ADHD.

Hyperactive-impulsive

Children diagnosed as hyperactive-impulsive may have trouble sitting still, so they tap their fingers or jiggle their legs. They tend to be on the go and run around when they shouldn’t. At times they’ll talk too much or blurt out answers in the classroom because they have difficulty waiting their turn.

Inattentive

These children have difficulty paying close attention to details. They’re unable to focus on tasks at school. On their own, they have trouble organizing tasks, keeping track of their belongings, and paying attention.

Combined

Children under the “combined” category have both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms. Combined is the most common type of ADHD in the United States.

How will I know if my child has ADHD?

If your child shows any of the above symptoms for at least six months, you should schedule an appointment with Dr. Azam. A medical examination is the best way to diagnose your child and get them on a treatment plan.

What are the treatment options for ADHD?

A specific test to diagnose ADHD doesn’t exist, but it’s common for a child to have a medical exam to rule out other potential illnesses. This involves providing your child’s medical history, any current prescription, and school records, if necessary.

Treatment plans consist of medications, behavioral therapy, and education. ADHD symptoms can’t be cured, but their severity can be reduced with treatment. Dr. Azam determines which treatment is the best for your child’s specific needs and symptoms.
